Opening Night… Add On Exhibition 2013

Tonight’s the night…

I’m very excited, and more than a little humbled to be invited to take part in this years Add On exhibition. It’s part of the Head On Photo Festival and curated by Charles McKean and Festival Director Moshe Rosenzveig. What’s cool about it, is that all of the images are exhibited anonymously. This year was an open theme, and all images are square. What’s amazing are the number of contributors and their background and calibre… like I said… I’m humbled to have my image amongst them.

If you’re in Sydney and fancy checking out some amazing photography, I highly recommend anything the Head On Festival has to offer, including Add On. The exhibition runs from 15-25 May, 11am – 6pm. It’s on at Depot II Gallery, 2 Danks St, Waterloo. More details can be found here.

Happy Mother’s Day…

I love Mother’s Day… it’s one of those days where kids young and old can truly celebrate their Mother’s and let them know how much they really appreciate them. Mother’s Day is also about handmade and this year I made my Mum some coasters resembling polaroids, from photos of the grandkids, bathroom tiles and mod podge… It was a Pinterest find and I love how they turned out…

Bayside Portrait PhotographerThis is my Mum and I (circa 1976). It’s one of the most treasured possessions I have (and yup, if the house went up in smoke, this is one thing I’d try and save). I love how content and happy we are. I love that my Dad took the photo… I also love the Sao’s and cheese on the table {LOL}… and the fact that they’re on white china plates with gold foil detail. That plate reminds me of the first time we got a microwave in the house, years later… let’s just say there were fireworks… and those plates were definitely not meant for microwave use.

This will be my Mum’s first Mother’s Day without her Mum… I wish I could be there for her, it breaks my heart that Nan isn’t here. Another selfless woman… much loved and sorely missed.

Where ever you are, take a moment to appreciate your Mum.. hopefully you’re with her celebrating… or perhaps you’ll give her a call.

For me… I’m going to celebrate with my little family, and while I’m at it, wish my Mum a Happy Mother’s Day, I love you Mum!

Enjoy!

Super Mario

I had an opportunity to bake another cake recently… We were stumped for ideas initially… the original request was for all of The Avengers (of the Super Hero kind) to appear atop the cake, then it was Megamind, then I struck on the idea of Mario…

There’s nothing quite like the challenge of making a cake that you’ve never attempted before and completing it within a time frame… oh and of course, passing the taste test!

I really wasn’t sure what I’d got myself into until I started trying to shape Mario… In the end it wasn’t too bad, and though it’s been a while since I sculpted anything, I think I can say my old Art teacher, Mr Wilson, might be a little relieved that it bears some resemblance to the original…

For the inside, I thought I’d try a different take on the rainbow cake I’d made previously… this was actually a lot harder than I thought it would be because I had to guess the tonal range as I was baking… I think it worked out okay and the birthday boy was pretty chuffed…

My next opportunity to bake will be for the Aquarius Bake Sale at 7he Sevens Stadium here in Dubai on Wednesday 7th November from 6:30pm… We’re raising money for our team mate Kate who is about to Swim Around the Worlds to raise money and awareness for Duchennes Muscular Dystrophy. You can ready all about her swim here and find out about her courageous nephew and Harrisons Fund here.  Oh and if you’re looking for a fun app for the kids, why not try Harrisons Super Eco Robot on iTunes or Google Play

Don’t forget… if you’re playing out at 7he Sevens that night, bring your tupperware containers and come and find us…

Enjoy!

Porthcawl | Wales

Summer holidays in Dubai are very long!

The great thing about that is they provide an excellent excuse to get out and see the world. Last Summer we took a trip to the UK to visit family and toured Wales, Kent, London and Lancashire. As a photographer, the opportunity to visit new places or even revisit old ones is a huge motivation to capture what you see and really dedicate time to photographing the places you’re exploring. The reality is often somewhat different though… travelling with children, and visiting friends and relatives can often eat in to any time you might have thought you had to explore a new place for yourself.

But I absolutely cannot complain, we managed to spend quality time with good friends and family, see where they live and explore the sights… and along the way some photos were taken… this is Porthcawl in South Wales…

Where did you spend your Summer holiday and where will you be heading to next?
