Roller Derby Road Trip

This weekend just gone, I had an awesome time travelling down to Canberra with my good friend Jen to watch the Victorian Roller Derby League take on the Vice City Rollers (Canberra) at Skate Fatale, held at the AIS Arena.

It wouldn’t be a trip to Canberra without checking out the sites, so first stop was Tilley’s for an awesome breakfast. Then off to the National Portrait Gallery to view the Annette Kellerman exhibition and of course the National Photographic Portrait Prize.

After a brief stop in a The Funny Shop to visit with Ursula and her Husband Ian, it was time for a bit of 8-wheeled touring. Seriously Canberra…. get your skates on. We only did a small part of the foreshores around Lake Burley Griffin, but you are absolutely blessed with places to skate… all those cycleways!

After much anticipation we headed out to the the AIS Arena to meet up with the Sydney Roller Derby League crew. While fans gethered in the stadium we took some time out to watch the live stream of the SRDL Sydney Assassins vs Wellington’s Richter City in NZ… what a bout. Congratulations on the win Sydney!

AIS Arena was absolutely heaving with the enthusiastic 3,500 strong  crowd and we were treated to an awesome bout. Here’s some of my favourite images from the night….

It’s not often you see the star being passed to the pivot…

Taking the whip…

More faves…

A good fan should always pay a visit to Merch for some awesome memoribilia that helps fund the league:-DThe girls were getting down to the half time entertainment…

The NRDL’s very own Suzy Pow leading the charge for crowd participation

The final score was 166 (VRDL) to 67 (CRDL). I’d personally like to thank the CRDL for inviting me to come photograph for them… it was awesome…

Our hotel had the quirky feature of mirrored ceilings (only in the hallways) and we couldn’t resist a little VRDL tribute…

The road trip was supposed to finish off with the early morning delights of Balloons Spectacular and as we joined hundreds of spectators at dawn on the lawns of Old Parliament House we were just a little disappointed to learn that the wind had scuppered plans for hot air balloon flights… Luckily, the Lions Club were serving up fresh pancakes so we happily headed for home… full of good food, good times and awesome memories:)

You can see the full gallery right over here! And don’t forget tickets to Sydney’s season opener on 2nd April at the Hordern are selling now at ticketek

Enjoy!
